Description

Wien-Budapest: Verlag “Österreich-Ungarn in Waffen”, 1916. 200 photomechanical prints measuring 19cm x 24.5cm mounted on sheets 36cm x 44cm. Four portfolios (50 images each) devoted to a different battle area and accompanied by a booklet. Mappe 1: In den Karrpathen (Carpathia). Mappe 2: Durch Galizian (Galicia). Mappe 3: Serbien (Serbia). Mappe 4: Montenegro und Albanien (Montenegro and Albania).

While all the prints are in very good to fine condition, many of the sheets on which they are mounted show slight tanning to their edges and bear small chips and tears to their edges. Booklets 1-3 are in very good condition, booklet 4 is in good condition with a fold to top corner and a stain on the bottom of the front cover. Minor foxing to all four. Lacks the original portfolio folders for the prints. Prints and booklets currently resting in a custom made solander box. Very Good in a Fine box. Scarce.

The Kriegsarchiv of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was established by Archduke Karl in 1801 as a research institution of the army. Together with the the “Hofkriegskanzleiarchiv” (founded in 1711), it is now housed within the greater Kriegsarchiv department of the Austrian State Archives, arguably the largest military history library in the world. This item is from the end of the original Kriegsarchiv institution era as the Austro-Hungarian empire collapsed at the end of WWI in 1918.
